AbstractIn this paper, the conditions of the atmospheric circulation for the 2001/2002 austral summer of the South America that contributed to dry (December 14-26, 2001) and rainy periods (January 03-08, 2001) of Northeast of the Brazil Region (NEB) are discussed. The results show that the interaction between an upper level cyclonic vortex over the South Atlantic Ocean and the continental Bolivian High contributes to the upper level divergence, low level convergence and associated ascendant movement. Theses conditions together with the low level (850 hPa) moisture transport from Amazon Region to NEB produce conditions to increase the precipitation over the NEB. Opposite conditions occur during the dry period.
